I’ve been playing around with folding, cutting, & layering two photographs together this week, to create the 3D pattern you see above. The original photographs were of a friends weathered patio, covered with shade cloth. I was attracted to the shadows, angles & colours, so took a few photographs for my pattern library.
I love playing with photographs, holding them in my hand, folding & cutting them with a pair of scissors, it connects me to my creative process. If I solely work with them in a computer system, like Photoshop or Illustrator, I feel disconnected, even frustrated! I guess I am so used to ‘working’ with my hands, that my brain struggles to transfer the process to a computer system. To create a digital file of my photo patterns I have to translate my usual thinking process, to a computer system process, which doesn’t come easy to me – yet! Personally I would rather just cut, fold, layer and glue by hand, then use my knowledge & experience of the construction process to inform how I then cut & layer it together on the computer to create a digital file of it! That way I get to enjoy my hand process, & be enabled to generate a digital ‘copy’ of it.
The hand build version looks way better on my wall though. The layering & folding creates shadows which change during the day, depending on what direction the light is coming from!
