This week is my exhibition week at The Learning Connexion, in Taita, Wellington, & the end of my level 7, Advanced Diploma of Creativity. It has been a magic year, being able to stay home, study full time by distance delivery, & have that time & space to really dig deep and develop my creative practice, & my collage work.
By simply taking one material, & applying one making process to it, I not only opened myself up to learning about the material itself, but also my relationship with it as a maker. Over the period of 1 year, we got to know each other better, became closer, & that relationship consistently surprised me, showing me things that are possible, showing me things I could never imagine by myself. All this was made possible, because The Learning Connexion school of creativity provide the framework for us, individually, to re-discover things we had forgotten were always there. I will miss their supportive environment and feedback.
I have discovered over this last year studying with The Learning Connexion school of creativity, that making my art, and keeping it to myself, robs me of the valuable & enriching experience of connecting to others, & connecting to the world in which I am but a small part of.
My preferred solitary process of making connects me strongly to myself, & I love that.
But showing and sharing my making process & finished work, reconnects me to the world, & the wonderful variety of people in it. It opens up a space for dialogue, where I experience how differently people can perceive what I make! I find it fascinating how art can uplift one person, yet be so totally insignificant to another!
So today begins my showing and sharing processes, interesting discoveries, pondering, finished work, & things I notice along the way of my creative life, as a maker, on this portfolio site.
It is my hope that what I share provides a spark to others to try creative things, or perhaps creatively think about something differently to what they normally do. It will be very interesting to see what this portfolio site looks like in another 12 months!
